Configuring Agent Instructions
Configuring Agent Instructions
Use per-agent instructions when you want different agents to have different roles, tones, or restrictions. Your additional instructions are appended to the system guide and delivered to the MCP client.
Where to Edit
- Workspace Settings → Agents list → agent menu → Edit → MCP additional instructions.
- Or enter them at creation. Up to 1,000 characters.
Writing Effective Instructions
Good instructions include four things.
- One-line role: "This agent assists the design team."
- Scope of work: "Only handle visual asset tasks (mocks, icons, images)."
- What not to do: "Never modify code or backend tasks."
- Priority or tone: "Report Urgent tasks first."
Example
This agent assists QA.
- Priority: tasks with `bug` label or Urgent priority
- When creating tasks, include three lines in the description:
reproduction steps, expected behavior, actual behavior
- Do not modify code or design assets
- If unsure, comment to the user and wait
FAQ
Can I fully replace the system guide?
No. Additional instructions are appended after the system guide. The common workflow (task cycle, recording style) applies consistently to all agents.
Do updates apply immediately?
They apply to new MCP sessions. Existing sessions pick up new instructions on the next connect.
Next Steps
- Return to Agent Mode Overview for permissions and activity logs.
